Born in Seoul, South Korea, Jisoo Yoo lives and works in France. Through a transdisciplinary practice that brings together installation, performance, moving image, sculpture, and digital technologies, she explores how our most familiar gestures, spaces, and beliefs are constructed by social, cultural, technological, and affective structures. Her work often emerges from the moment when what had previously seemed solid, natural, or self-evident begins to waver, revealing its provisional, fragile, and constructed character.
The house, the room, clothing, and everyday gestures are recurring figures in her practice. She approaches them not as stable forms, but as vulnerable structures through which questions of identity, belonging, protection, and control are restaged. Home, often associated with intimacy and safety, appears as a perceptual, social, and affective fiction: a space we believe we inhabit, possess, or master, but which always remains conditional. Her installations and performances bring these familiar spaces into view in order to reveal their instability. Through light, precarious, or transformable materials such as fabric, transparent plastic, inflatable structures, ceramic, computer-generated images, and virtual environments, she creates forms that move, deform, repeat, or disappear. They often offer the image of refuge, while exposing the fragility of the protection and belonging they seem to promise. The notion of the mirage runs throughout her work. It refers to images, spaces, or forms of belonging that seem tangible, yet remain fragile, shifting, and always liable to disappear. By making what appears familiar begin to waver, her work seeks to make perceptible the ways in which our realities are constructed, repeated, and undone. |
